LENNON

John Lennon Lyrics -“Steel And Glass”

John Lennon - Steel and Glass

Describing his venom for Allen Klein, the dishonest manager who took advantage of theBeatles in their time of vulnerability after their longtime orginial manager Brian Epstein committed suicide.

Klein amazingly recommended by Mick Jagger.

Allen Klein would eventually rip off both The Beatles and the Stones and become infamous for his treachery.

This song, created by Lennon in 1974 during his “lost weekend” summer in Los Angeles, commemmorates Kleins betrayel and thievery.

(This is a story about your friend and mine

Who is it, who is it, who is it?)

There you stand with your L.A. tan

And your New York walk and your New York talk

You’re mother left you when you were small

But you’re gonna wish you wasn’t born at all

Steel and glass

Your phone don’t ring no one answers your call

How does it feel to be off the wall

Well your mouthpiece squawks as he spreads your lies

But you can’t pull strings if your hands are tied

Well your teeth are clean but your mind is capped

You leave your smell like an alley cat

Beatles 1960

Early early Beatles, before 1963

Mainly a cover band, the first several years for the Beatles were more of a hard work, low pay, long hours lifestyle. They playes all over the U.K., driving around in a beat up old van, and went over to Hamburg a few times for long stints on the Reeperbahn, among the strip clubs and seedy bars. This was before Ringo, when Stuart Sutcliffe and Pete Best were the other bandmembers.

This early version was quite different than the Beatles we discovered in 1963 or after. For me it was late 1963m when i heard “She loves you yeah, yeah, yeah.

Paul and George: I Need You / Friends To Leave

In 2005 Paul released a quiet, more contemplative “grown up” album than he had before, CHAOS AND CREATION IN THE BACKYARD. At that time I dismissed this this album –– I felt that he was past his prime as a post-Beatle and was too interested in releasing album after album. How many great songs could he write, anyway? Also, as a soloist he put out some very weak songs on several albums that were a bit ridiculous, should have never been released IMO. He released over 40 albums over the past 50 years; that’s a lot of music –– too many songs, 500 or so, volume vs. quality.

However, Paul is a genius in my mind. Despite his inability to edit himself (or is it the money? He’s a former Beatle, so can always get funded to make more music), he has created dozens of great records with and without Wings, and he’s always trying.

If you watch the documentary following the CHAOS album, called CHAOS AND CREATION AT ABBEY ROAD STUDIOS, you’ll see the genius at work, relaxed, experimenting, forthcoming, working with just his producer, playing an acoustic guitar. He is very good live, spontaneous, without artifice.

This was 2005, 25 years after John died, and only 4 years after George had died. So his soul was probably a bit rattled. Two of the four were now gone.

One of the great values of these periodic albums is that they last forever. Here we are 18 years later, just discovering this box of gems.  It also turned me on to Nigel Godrich, a producer with an amazing list of credits producing for Radiohead, Travis, Pavement, R.E.M., Arcade Fire ++. Nigel uses a keyboard effect on this al
